Fireblocks cites 196 million x402 transactions, $42 million settled and a sharp shift from speculative bot churn to lower-volume usage.

Agentic commerce is moving onto enterprise roadmaps, but the payment data remain difficult to interpret, according to Fireblocks’ Nov. 3, 2026 analysis. The report says x402 has processed more than 196 million transactions across 12 chains and settled more than $42 million since launch, while also warning that public blockchain records blend routine automation, speculative bot activity and genuine agentic spend.

    Speculation inflated early activity

Fireblocks, citing agenteconomy.to and Chainalysis observations, said more than half of x402’s lifetime transactions came during a two-month burst in late 2025 tied to PING, a token minted through x402. In November 2025, volume reached a record $20.5 million across 52.6 million transactions. By December, settled value had fallen to $9.4 million even as transaction counts rose to 54.2 million, reflecting low-cost loops on Base rather than sustained economic usage, the report said.

The analysis said the post-speculation baseline is lower but more stable. Monthly x402 transactions fell 92% from the December peak and have since held between 4 million and 6 million, apart from a brief surge in August and early September. Fireblocks said the latest full month in October 2026 saw 5.1 million transactions worth $274,000.

    Evidence of stickier usage

Fireblocks said the less noisy period shows signs of operational use. According to Chainalysis data cited in the report, the median time from wallet funding to first x402 payment fell from 73 days in late 2025 to 18 minutes in Q3 2026, and two in three new wallets spent within an hour of funding. The report also said 89% of active wallets first funded in Q2 2026 were topped up again within 30 days, compared with 71% for the Q3 2025 cohort.

Payment size is also shaping protocol design. Fireblocks said more than 87% of x402 payments over the 16 months through September 2026 were worth between a hundredth of a cent and ten cents, while payments of $1 or more grew from 49% of x402 value on Base in the protocol’s early months to 95% by early 2026. Since May 2026, however, the average x402 payment has fallen back to a few cents, the report said.

    Stablecoins and protocol split

The report says agentic commerce has developed almost entirely on stablecoins. Citing Allium’s Q3 2026 report, Fireblocks said stablecoin supply ended September at $305 billion, up 0.4% for the year, while stablecoin payments rose 45% year over year to $482 billion in the first nine months of 2026. Allium also said agent payments doubled to 68.3 million in Q3 2026 while their value slipped to $3.7 million, or roughly five cents per payment, though its classification differs from x402-only tracking.

Fireblocks said Base has carried about 45% of all x402 transactions to date, with Solana second at about 34%, and that more than 99% of x402 payment value on Base over the past 30 days settled in USDC. The report argues the market is beginning to split between x402 for discrete web requests and session-based systems such as the Machine Payments Protocol for continuous, high-volume workloads.

    Enterprise adoption still trails forecasts

The report places the payment data against large but still prospective forecasts. Fireblocks cites McKinsey’s projection that agentic commerce could orchestrate $3 trillion to $5 trillion in global consumer goods sales by 2030, excluding services and B2B, and notes Gartner’s 2026 CIO and Technology Executive Survey, fielded in mid-2025, found only 17% of organizations had deployed AI agents while more than 60% expected to within two years.

Fireblocks says the biggest gaps are not in transaction counts but in identity, controls and attribution. Public blockchains can show that an address transferred value, the report says, but cannot verify the offchain environment that triggered the command. The analysis also says companies still lack a standard way to distinguish legitimate business activity from fraud or to measure agent-generated revenue consistently.
